Luka & Léo Ispir : works for violin and cello

For its fourth album, the Foundation has chosen to spotlight two brothers, violonist Luka Ispir and cellist Léo Ispir, both laureates of the second class of Fondation Gautier Capuçon. Their programme is an eclectic one, linking their Turkish roots — with a work by Fazıl Say written especially for the album — with their shared passion for Bach, Handel, Mozart and Ravel
This album presents an aesthetically diverse programme, with the two brothers keen to celebrate their origins while covering a wide stylistic range, mixing masterpieces by Bach and Mozart with Ravel’s iconic Sonata for Violin and Cello. It also includes the world premiere recording of Street of Memories, op. 115, by Turkish composer and pianist Fazıl Say, and Halvorsen’s re-written version of Handel’s Passacaglia.

Anastasia Rizikov

Lisa Strauss

Duo Shum: works for piano and cello

The “Fondation Gautier Capuçon présente” collection continues its mission with this album by the duo Shum (шум), formed by Ukrainian-Canadian pianist Anastasia Rizikov and Franco-Russian cellist Lisa Strauss.

The word shum, which means ‘noise’ in French, evokes the origins of the two parents passed on to them the history and traditions of the Slavic twentieth century. Since it was founded in 2022, the duo has given pride of place to the music of Eastern and Central Europe, the Balkans and Asia Minor. It takes audiences on a journey to the crossroads of East and West.

The Shum duo’s first album pays tribute to rare works from the piano and cello repertoire of the 20th and 21st centuries. From Asia Minor to the Baltic States, this musical journey begins in Turkey with the Four Cities sonata composed by Fazıl Say. A symbol of peace since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Myroslav Skoryk’s Melody was one of the first scores that the Shum duo performed in concert. This tribute to the Ukrainian people is also reflected in the piece for solo piano on the record: Dumka-Shumka by Mykola Lysenko, the father of Ukrainian classical music. Russian aesthetics, the sister of Ukrainian culture, are represented by Sergei Rachmaninov’s famous Vocalise. Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances faithfully transcribe traditional dances recorded in the Transylvanian countryside, while Alfred Schnittke’s Sonata No. 1 for Cello and Piano is largely imbued with the Soviet era in which the composer grew up. The album’s musical journey closes with a hypnotic page by Arvo Pärt, Spiegel im Spiegel.
